Twitch Link in Bio Not Opening the App from Instagram? Here's Why

Short answer
Instagram opens your Twitch link in its own in-app browser, not in Safari or Chrome. That browser has its own cookies, so fans see a logged-out web player. Getting them into their real browser first means they arrive with their own logins.
You go live, post a story with your Twitch link, and the taps come in. But the chat stays quiet. Many of those viewers never reached your stream logged in. They landed on a logged-out web page inside Instagram and left. Here is why that happens and what actually fixes it.
Why doesn't my Twitch link open the Twitch app from Instagram?
Instagram does not hand your link to Safari or Chrome. It opens it in its own in-app browser, and that browser usually blocks the hand-off from a web page to an installed app. So instead of the Twitch app, your viewer gets the twitch.tv website inside Instagram.
Your link is fine. The in-app browser around it is what gets in the way.
Why are viewers logged out when they land on my stream?
The in-app browser keeps its own cookies, separate from Safari and from the Twitch app. A viewer who is logged in to Twitch on their phone still arrives as a stranger. Following, chatting and subscribing all start with a login screen, and most people will not type a password in the middle of a scroll.
That is the costly part for streamers. A follow is the reason you post the link in the first place, and the login screen sits right in front of it. The full list of what breaks is in in-app browser vs real browser.
Does "open in browser" in the menu fix it?
Yes, but only for the few viewers who do it. The option sits behind the three dots in the top corner, and asking your whole audience to find it every time you go live does not work. A line like "tap ⋯ and open in browser" in your bio costs you space and still loses most taps.
How do I get viewers from Instagram into my Twitch stream?
Move them out of the in-app browser into their real browser, where their own logins are. That is what a plugwith.me link does. You put one plugwith.me/yourname link in your bio or story, with your Twitch channel as the destination. When a viewer taps it inside Instagram on an iPhone, Meta's own "open outside Instagram" dialog appears first. One tap on that, and your Twitch channel opens in the viewer's real browser, with their own logins instead of the in-app browser's empty session.
- One link for every stream. Your channel URL does not change, so the bio link never needs updating.
- No "open in browser" instructions in your bio.
- Viewers land in their real browser with their own logins, not in a logged-out in-app session.
Does it work from other apps too?
On iPhone we have confirmed the route into the real browser on a real device from Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads and Telegram. On WhatsApp and Telegram the real browser opens immediately, on Threads with no confirmation step. On Facebook it takes two steps: a Continue button, then Facebook's own prompt. Want to see the problem on your own phone first? Open the free WebView test from your Instagram bio. It shows which browser you are really in. If you also link a Patreon or Ko-fi page next to your stream, the same browser is behind those failures, see why Patreon links fail from Instagram. Create your free plugwith.me link, no card needed.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Twitch link open the website instead of the app?
Because it was tapped inside Instagram. Instagram does not pass the link to Safari or Chrome; its in-app browser loads the twitch.tv website itself, with its own empty session.
Why are my viewers logged out when they arrive?
The in-app browser keeps its own cookies, separate from Safari and from the Twitch app. A viewer who is logged in everywhere else arrives as a stranger, so following, chatting and subscribing all start with a login screen.
Does a different Twitch URL fix it?
No. Short links, the mobile URL and the www version all open in the same in-app browser. The problem is where the link is tapped, not which URL you use.
How do I send viewers from different platforms to different places?
Give each bio its own plugwith.me link. Create a second link with its own slug and destination, and put that one in the other bio.
Which other apps does this work from?
On iPhone we have confirmed it on a real device from Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads and Telegram. The current list is in our guide to escaping the in-app browser.
Get Instagram taps out of the in-app browser.
Made for Twitch × Instagram. From Instagram, one plugwith.me link leaves the in-app browser and opens your fan's real browser, with one tap on Instagram's own confirmation.
