How to Test Your Link in Bio Inside Instagram and TikTok
Short answer
Test by tapping the link from inside the app the way a follower would, on a real iPhone and a real Android phone, while logged out of the destination. Pasting the URL into Safari tests a browser your audience never uses, so it can pass while the real path fails.

Why does testing in Safari prove nothing?
Two things are different when a follower taps your link, and both of them matter.
First, the browser. Their tap opens Instagram's or TikTok's in-app browser, not Safari or Chrome — a webview where app hand-offs, payment sheets and passkeys frequently do not work. Second, the session. That webview has its own isolated storage, so the visitor arrives logged out of the destination even though they are logged in everywhere else on their phone.

Step 1 — Tap it from inside the app, not from your notes
Put the link where it actually lives: your bio, a story sticker, a pinned comment. Then open the app as a normal user and tap it from there. Do not paste, do not use a QR code, do not open it from a message to yourself. Each of those routes uses a different browser, and the whole point is to test the one you cannot choose.
Step 2 — Test on iOS and on Android
These are two different failure modes, not one. iOS restricts the hand-off from a web page to an app, and the mechanisms that get around it are largely undocumented. Android has a documented path but behaves differently across launchers and default-browser settings. A link verified on an iPhone is half-verified.
Step 3 — Log out first, or use a second device
Your own account is the reason this leak survives so long: you are logged in to every destination you link to, so you never see the login wall your audience hits. Log out of the destination, use a private window, or borrow a phone. This single step surfaces more broken links than the rest of the checklist combined.
Step 4 — Check what actually opened
"The page loaded" is not the test. Ask specifically:
- Did the native app open, or a web page that looks like it?
- Was the visitor still logged in, or asked to sign in again?
- Is there an address bar, or is this still inside the social app?
- Did anything appear twice — two tabs, two browsers, a flash of one page before another?
That last one is worth taking seriously. Two browsers opening on one tap is a real failure mode of poorly built escape logic, and it reads to a visitor as a broken or unsafe link.
Step 5 — Test the step after the landing page
The landing page is rarely where money is lost. Go one step further and complete the action you are actually asking for: start the checkout, open the payment sheet, run the login, hit the age gate. Payments and authentication are exactly the capabilities in-app browsers restrict most, so a page that renders perfectly can still fail at the only step that counts.
Step 6 — Re-test after every platform update
This is not a one-time check. The mechanisms that pop a visitor out of an in-app browser are mostly undocumented, so they change with no announcement — and they change per app, which is why a link can keep working on TikTok while quietly failing on Instagram. No. A click is recorded when the page opens, which happens whether or not the app hand-off, the login or the checkout afterwards succeeded. Click counts cannot distinguish a working link from a broken one.
